JAVA
Around the middle of February Apple cut Java off. Apple decided that Java would not be allowed to run on Macs until they addressed security issues Apple felt were a serious threat. For years now I've heard about security holes in Java and that you should disable it on your computer.
Do you need Java? Maybe. Maybe not. At work we have one program that requires Java in order to work. I know that. However, there may be other programs that use Java that I don't know about.
It didn't take long (4 days in fact) before Java released a patch and Java would work again on the Mac (Java never stopped working on Windows machines). In fact, I believe I have now installed three Java updates in the past couple of weeks. To be honest, I am getting tired of them as I have 100+ computers that need the update.
I will be posting information about the Java issue tomorrow. These are comments I have found in my online user group, at Reed's Corner, on MacWorld and other places. I will also posts some programs that are know to use Java. These are opinions and, as we know, we all have our own. You may or may not agree with what is said, but I thought I would share the comments with you so you can make up your own mind as to the exposure/risk posed by using Java.
